The Big Commute: Taking Care of Business Overseas with GSM/GPRS Roaming It's 3 a.m. and Heather Nadler is wide awake wrestling with a tough decision. Should she allow her fourteen-year old daughter to go to a concert downtown with some of her friends? As VP of a small Vancouver-based software company, making tough decisions at three in the morning is nothing new. Making the decision and communicating with a GSM world phone while sitting in her Hong Kong hotel room, however, is. Industry estimates suggest that by 2005 companies will be spending $20 billion a year to give their workers mobile access. As the GSM/GPRS network continues to expand, a greater number of business professionals like Heather are able to bring their wireless devices with them during trips outside of Canada. For those mobile entrepreneurs who have come to depend on their wireless devices to keep connected to home and office throughout the day, global roaming provides a very real set of benefits - accessibility and productivity from virtually anywhere. "I used to return from overseas to unanswered messages," Heather recounts. "In terms of time management alone, I've saved an incredible amount by being able to deal with those everyday issues as they arise, no matter where I am." GPRS service benefits more than just the individual employee. For Heather's company, it keeps an important employee constantly in touch, while offering a significant cost savings over Internet access fees charged by most hotels. And more importantly, for Heather's daughter at least, global GSM/GPRS service ensures that life's key decisions are only ever a click away.
Wireless Desktop Now Available to Mobile Professionals Across Canada Rogers® AT&T Wireless has teamed up with ViAir® Inc., a leading provider of wireless e-mail solutions for wireless carriers, to launch Wireless Desktop, a new Internet and corporate e-mail service for Rogers AT&T Wireless customers across Canada. Wireless Desktop provides Rogers AT&T Wireless customers with the ability to immediately and securely access their Internet (POP3) and corporate e-mail accounts from any Internet-enabled wireless device - phone, PDA or laptop - anytime, from virtually anywhere. Plus, those with Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino accounts can also access files*, calendar, and contacts while out of the office. The demand from mobile professionals for wireless access to e-mail and corporate LANs has long been felt throughout corporate IT circles. Recent survey data released by the Yankee Group illustrates the trend toward greater wireless connectivity, stating that: 50 percent of large enterprises in the United States plan to implement a wireless/mobile solution over the next two years. With Wireless Desktop, both small and large business customers can immediately add a simple solution, rich with functionality, to their existing Rogers AT&T Wireless service plan. The ease of adoption of wireless solutions is a key component to a company's success in today's technology-driven business environment. Gene Signorini, Senior Analyst Wireless/Mobile Enterprise and Commerce for the Yankee Group, explains. "While businesses will be appropriately deliberate about deploying applications, it now is far riskier for Enterprises to move too slowly with wireless applications given the potential loss of competitive advantages that include revenue enhancements or cost savings to their business." *File access is only available using a desktop computer, laptop or Pocket PC.
